NSC Calculator
Calculate your NSC maturity value, total interest, and year-wise accrual at India Post's current rate.
How to Use This Calculator
Formula:
Maturity Value = P × (1 + r ÷ 100)^5 | At 7.7% p.a. for 5 Years: ₹1,00,000 grows to ₹1,44,903 (Years 1–4 interest eligible for Sec 80C)
- Enter your lump-sum 'Investment Amount (₹)' — NSC VIII Issue accepts any amount from ₹1,000 upward in multiples of ₹100 with no upper ceiling.
- Confirm the 'Interest Rate (% p.a.)' — pre-filled at India Post's current 7.7% annual compounding rate — and note the fixed '5 Years (NSC VIII)' tenure.
- Select 'Your Income Tax Slab' (0% to 30% under the Old Regime, or your marginal New Regime bracket) to model post-tax net maturity.
- Input your '80C Limit Already Used (₹)' from EPF, PPF, LIC, or tuition fees (out of the ₹1,50,000 statutory cap) to check how much of your initial principal and Year 1–4 accrued interest gets sheltered.
- Review your Maturity Amount, Total Interest Earned, Post-Tax Net Maturity, and the 'Year-wise Interest Accrual' table across Years 1 through 5.
Frequently Asked Questions
NSC carries no TDS at the post office, but its interest is not tax-free like PPF. Under the Old Tax Regime, interest accrued at the end of Years 1, 2, 3, and 4 is added to 'Income from Other Sources' in your annual ITR and simultaneously claimed back as a deemed reinvested investment under Section 80C (within the ₹1.5 lakh overall limit), making Years 1–4 effectively tax-neutral! Only Year 5's interest is paid out at maturity and taxed at your slab rate.
Three clear advantages favor NSC VIII Issue: first, at 7.7% p.a. sovereign-guaranteed rate, NSC typically beats PSU and large private bank 5-year Tax-Saver FDs (6.50%–7.00%); second, India Post deducts zero TDS on NSC regardless of investment size, whereas banks deduct 10% TDS once interest crosses ₹50,000/year; third, Bank Tax-Saver FD interest does not qualify for Years 1–4 Section 80C deemed reinvestment.
No! Unlike PPF or Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana — where quarterly government rate revisions apply to your entire existing balance — NSC locks in the exact notified interest rate on the day you buy the certificate for all 5 years. Buying at 7.7% guarantees ₹1,44,903 per ₹1,00,000 at maturity even if future small-savings rates drop to 6.8%.
No voluntary premature closure is permitted during the 5-year lock-in. Under National Savings Certificates (VIII Issue) Scheme rules, premature encashment is allowed only in three exceptional circumstances: death of the single holder (or any/all holders in a joint account), forfeiture by a pledgee who is a Gazetted Officer/bank, or a specific order of a court of law.
Yes! Because NSC is backed by the sovereign guarantee of the Government of India, scheduled commercial banks and housing finance companies readily accept NSC VIII Issue as collateral security at 80% to 90% Loan-to-Value (LTV) at low secured interest rates. You submit an application for transfer/pledging at the post office while your certificate continues compounding at 7.7%.
Only resident Indian individuals can invest in NSC — either singly, jointly (Joint A or Joint B up to three adults), as a guardian on behalf of a minor/person of unsound mind, or by a minor aged 10 years and above in their own name. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), Trusts, and companies are prohibited from buying new NSCs (though a resident who turns NRI before maturity holds it till Year 5).
