Frequently Asked Questions
Under the Public Provident Fund Scheme, interest is calculated on the lowest balance standing to your credit between the close of the 5th day and the end of each calendar month. If you deposit funds on or before the 5th of the month, you earn interest for that entire month. If you deposit on the 6th or later, that deposit earns zero interest for that month and only begins accruing interest from the following month. Always set monthly auto-debits on or before the 4th.
Yes. PPF enjoys 'EEE' (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status under the Indian Income Tax Act. The initial deposit qualifies for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1,50,000 per year (Exempt 1), the annual interest accrued is completely tax-free under Section 10(11) (Exempt 2), and the entire lump-sum maturity amount withdrawn at the end of the term is 100% tax-free with zero capital gains tax (Exempt 3).
The maximum statutory limit is ₹1,50,000 per financial year across all PPF accounts held by an individual. If you open a PPF account in your name and another account as a legal guardian for a minor child, the combined total deposit in both accounts together cannot exceed ₹1,50,000 in a single financial year. Any excess amount deposited above ₹1.5 Lakh earns no interest and is refunded without tax benefits.
Yes. Upon completing 15 financial years, you have three legal options: (1) Withdraw the entire accumulated corpus tax-free and close the account, (2) Extend the account in blocks of 5 years with fresh contributions (Form H must be submitted within 1 year of maturity), or (3) Retain the account indefinitely in 5-year blocks without making any fresh contributions while continuing to earn prevailing tax-free interest on the entire balance.
You can apply for a short-term loan against your PPF balance starting from the 3rd financial year up to the 6th financial year (up to 25% of the balance at the end of the second preceding year). Partial withdrawals are permitted starting from the 7th financial year onwards, capped at 50% of the account balance at the end of the 4th preceding year or the end of the immediate preceding year, whichever is lower.
At the current interest rate of 7.1% compounded annually, investing ₹1,50,000 on or before April 5 every year yields ₹40,68,209 at the end of the 15-year maturity (principal ₹22.5L, interest ₹18.18L). If extended with continued contributions for another 10 years (total 25 years), your total principal of ₹37,50,000 compounds into a massive, 100% tax-free sovereign corpus of approximately ₹1,03,08,015 (over ₹1.03 Crore).
