How to Use This Calculator
Formula:
NPS Corpus at 60 = M × [((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i) | Tax-Free Lump Sum = 60% × Corpus | Monthly Pension = (Annuity % × Corpus × Annuity Rate) ÷ 12
- Enter your 'Current age' (between 18 and 60 years; the calculator projects compounding through normal superannuation at age 60).
- Input your planned 'Monthly NPS contribution' into your Tier-1 pension account (minimum ₹500/month or ₹1,000/year under PFRDA rules).
- Set your 'Expected annual return' (historically 9.5% to 12.5% depending on equity allocation) and the expected 'Annuity rate' at retirement (current Indian insurer range: 5.8% to 6.8%).
- Adjust 'Annuity purchase (% of corpus)' (minimum 40% required by law; remaining up to 60% is withdrawn tax-free) and select your 'Tax slab' for Old Regime 80C + 80CCD(1B) tax savings.
- Review your projected NPS Corpus at 60, 60% Tax-Free Lump Sum, Monthly Pension, and cumulative tax saved over your career.
Frequently Asked Questions
Under the Old Tax Regime, NPS offers three stacked deductions: up to ₹1,50,000 inside Section 80CCE, an exclusive extra ₹50,000 under Section 80CCD(1B) (saving ₹15,600 alone in the 30% bracket), plus employer Corporate NPS contributions under Section 80CCD(2). Under the default FY 2025-26 New Tax Regime, self-contributions do not get deductions, but Employer Corporate NPS u/s 80CCD(2) is 100% deductible up to 14% of Basic + DA!
NPS Tier-1 is nearly EEE with one crucial pension caveat. At age 60, up to 60% of your accumulated corpus can be withdrawn completely tax-free under Section 10(12A) — either as a single lump sum or via PFRDA's Systematic Lump Sum Withdrawal (SLW) instalments up to age 75. The remaining minimum 40% purchases a life annuity from an IRDAI insurer: the purchase itself is tax-free, but the monthly pension payouts are taxed at your retirement income slab.
Under Active Choice, you manually set percentages across Equity (Class E, capped at 75% until age 50), Corporate Bonds (Class C), and Government Securities (Class G). Under Auto Choice, your equity exposure automatically glides down with age across three presets: Aggressive LC75 (starts at 75% equity up to age 35), Moderate LC50 (50% equity), or Conservative LC25 (25% equity). Investors in their 20s and 30s typically maximize compounding with 75% Class E.
Partial tax-free withdrawals up to 25% of your own contributions (excluding employer contributions and investment growth) are permitted up to three times during your entire tenure after completing 3 years in NPS — strictly for specified milestones like children's higher education or marriage, buying/constructing a first house, or critical illness treatment. Exiting completely before age 60 forces 80% of the corpus into a taxable annuity (unless total corpus is ₹2.5 lakh or less).
Under PFRDA Exit Regulations, if your total accumulated Tier-1 pension wealth at superannuation (age 60) is ₹5,00,000 or less, the mandatory 40% annuity rule is waived completely — you can withdraw 100% of the corpus as a single lump sum. For premature exit before age 60, the 100% lump-sum threshold is ₹2,50,000.
PFRDA caps Pension Fund Manager (PFM) investment management fees at just 0.03% to 0.09% per annum — roughly ten times cheaper than even Direct Index Mutual Funds (0.20%–0.40%) and nearly 100 times cheaper than regular actively managed mutual funds (1.50%–2.00%). Over a 30-year retirement horizon, saving 1% annually in fund expenses preserves 18% to 24% more terminal retirement corpus.
