SGPA Calculator
Calculate SGPA from subject grades and credit hours on India's 10-point scale.
How to Use This Calculator
Formula:
SGPA = Σ(Course Credit × Grade Point) ÷ Σ(Course Credits) | CGPA = Σ(Semester SGPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Total Degree Credits
- Enter the number of subjects or courses undertaken in the specific academic semester.
- For each course, enter the assigned course credit hours (e.g., 3 or 4 credits for theory papers, 1 or 2 credits for laboratory/practical sessions).
- Select the letter grade earned from the standard 10-point Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) dropdown: O (10), A+ (9), A (8), B+ (7), B (6), C (5), P (4), or F (0).
- Select your university or affiliating technical board (e.g., VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, SPPU, AKTU) to apply local percentage conversion formulas.
- Review your final calculated Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA), total credit points earned, academic standing class, and equivalent percentage score.
Frequently Asked Questions
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) evaluates an undergraduate or postgraduate student's academic performance in a single standalone semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the credit-weighted average of all SGPAs across your entire academic program up to the present semester. While your SGPA can fluctuate sharply between terms, your CGPA provides a smooth reflection of long-term academic consistency.
Multiply each course's credit hours by the numeric grade points corresponding to your letter grade to calculate 'Credit Points'. Sum all Credit Points together, then divide by the sum of all Course Credits for that semester. Formula: SGPA = Total Credit Points ÷ Total Semester Credits. For example, a 4-credit course with grade A (8 pts) gives 32 credit points, and a 3-credit course with grade O (10 pts) gives 30 credit points; 62 credit points divided by 7 credits yields an SGPA of 8.86.
Conversion formulas vary by university board. Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) uses: Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10. Anna University uses: Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) uses: Percentage = (SGPA × 10). Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) uses distinct tabular formulas for various score ranges. Always verify your university’s examination ordinances before submitting job applications.
Yes. Under UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) guidelines, an 'F' (Fail) or 'Ab' (Absent) grade carries 0 grade points. However, the credit hours of that course are still included in the denominator of total semester credits. For instance, failing a 4-credit course contributes 0 credit points but adds 4 credits to the divisor, severely depressing your semester SGPA.
In most Indian autonomous institutions, IITs, NITs, and central universities, an SGPA or CGPA of 8.50 and above is designated as First Class with Distinction. An SGPA between 6.75 and 8.49 is classified as First Class, an SGPA between 5.75 and 6.74 is Second Class, and an SGPA between 4.00 and 5.74 represents Pass Division.
You can only compute a simple average if both semesters carry the exact same number of credits (e.g., exactly 22 credits in Semester 1 and 22 credits in Semester 2). If Semester 1 has 20 credits (SGPA 8.0) and Semester 2 has 26 credits (SGPA 9.0), the true weighted CGPA is ((20 × 8.0) + (26 × 9.0)) ÷ 46 = 394 ÷ 46 = 8.565, not the simple average of 8.50.
