Square Footage Calculator
Calculate square footage for any room shape · rectangle, circle, triangle, or L-shape.
How to Use This Calculator
Formula:
Rectangle = L × W | L-Shape = (L₁ × W₁) + (L₂ × W₂) | Triangle = 0.5 × Base × Height | Circle = π × (D ÷ 2)² | Order Area = Net ft² × (1 + Waste%) | 1 ft² = 0.092903 m²
- Select your preferred measurement unit at the top: Feet (ft²), Meters (m²), or Yards (yd²)—all results convert automatically to square feet and square meters.
- For each room or zone, name the space, pick its geometric Shape (Rectangle, Circle, Triangle, or L-Shape), and enter its dimensions; click '+ Add Room' to combine every room in your project.
- In the Material Estimator section, set your Waste Factor % (10% for straight plank/tile, 15% for diagonal/large-format), enter your Flooring Cost ($/sq ft), and input Ceiling Height (ft) for 2-coat wall paint estimates.
- Check the summary cards for Total Area (ft² and m²), total ordering area with waste included, total flooring material budget, and estimated interior paint gallons, plus the itemized Rooms Summary table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Never enter 12 feet 6 inches as '12.6'—6 inches is half a foot (6 ÷ 12 = 0.50 ft), whereas 0.6 ft is over 7 inches! Divide extra inches by 12 to get exact decimal feet: 3 in = 0.25 ft, 4 in = 0.33 ft, 6 in = 0.50 ft, 8 in = 0.67 ft, 9 in = 0.75 ft, and 10 in = 0.83 ft. Entering 12.6 × 15.8 instead of 12.5 × 15.67 overstates area by nearly 4 sq ft per room.
Never multiply the longest overall wall by the widest overall wall—that includes dead space outside the room! Instead, stretch a painter's tape line across the corner turn to split the L-shaped floor into two non-overlapping rectangles (Section 1 and Section 2). Select 'L-Shape' in the calculator and enter Length 1 × Width 1 plus Length 2 × Width 2 to sum the exact floor area.
Add 7% to 10% overage for straight-lay luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or laminate in rectangular rooms, and 10% to 12% for natural solid oak hardwood (to cull knotty or warped mill boards). Increase waste to 15% for 45-degree diagonal tile or large-format 24×48-inch porcelain slabs, and 18% to 20% for herringbone or chevron parquet patterns due to angled perimeter cuts.
Under ANSI Z765 appraisal standards used by Fannie Mae, Gross Living Area is measured along the exterior footprint of finished, heated, above-grade living spaces with at least 7-foot ceiling height over 50%+ of the room. Unheated garages, covered patios, screened porches, open two-story foyer airspaces, and below-grade basements (even if 100% finished!) are excluded from primary GLA and listed separately.
Because 1 yard equals 3 feet, 1 square yard equals 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet—divide total square feet by 9 when comparing traditional broadloom carpet yardage quotes (a 180 sq ft bedroom equals 20 sq yd). In residential roofing and siding, 1 'square' equals exactly 100 square feet, so a 2,400 sq ft roof surface equals 24 roofing squares before pitch and hip/ridge waste.
One US gallon of quality acrylic-latex interior paint covers 350 to 400 square feet of smooth primed drywall in a single coat—or roughly 175 to 200 square feet of finished two-coat wall area. Bare new drywall, heavy orange-peel/knockdown stucco texture, or drastic color shifts soak up 20% to 30% more paint, so always prime bare patches first.
