Steel Weight Calculator
Calculate steel, iron, and metal weight for round bars, flat plates/MS sheets, hollow pipes, square bars, and angle iron.
How to Use This Calculator
Formula:
Weight (kg) = Cross-Section Area (m²) × Length (m) × 7,850 kg/m³ × Pieces | Round Bar / Rebar Shortcut: W (kg/m) = D_mm² ÷ 162.2 | Pipe: W (kg/m) = 0.02466 × T × (OD − T)
- Select your structural profile tab at the top: Round Bar (TMT rebar / shafting), Flat Plate / Sheet, Hollow Pipe (CHS), Square Bar / Tube (SHS), or equal-leg Angle Iron.
- Choose your Cross-Section Units (Millimeters mm or Inches in), select Length Units (Meters m, Feet ft, or Millimeters mm), and enter the total Number of Pieces in your bill of materials.
- Enter the exact section dimensions for your chosen profile—such as Diameter for round bars, Width and Thickness for MS plates, Outer Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness for pipes, or Leg Length and Thickness for angle iron.
- Read the instant Total Weight in both kilograms (kg) and pounds (lbs), along with linear unit weight in kg/m and single-piece weight for crane rigging, freight, and mill procurement.
Frequently Asked Questions
The classic site formula Weight (kg/m) = D² ÷ 162.2 derives directly from cylinder geometry and standard mild steel density (7,850 kg/m³). For a 1-meter round bar with diameter D in millimeters: Volume = (π ÷ 4) × (D ÷ 1,000)² × 1 m = 0.0000007854 × D² m³. Multiplying by 7,850 kg/m³ gives 0.0061654 × D² kg/m—and the reciprocal 1 ÷ 0.0061654 equals exactly 162.196 (rounded on job sites to 162.2 or 162).
This calculator uses the structural carbon/mild steel standard density of 7,850 kg/m³. Because stainless alloys contain heavier nickel and molybdenum, multiply the calculator's steel weight by 1.010 for Austenitic SS 304 (7,930 kg/m³) or by 1.017 for Marine SS 316 (7,980 kg/m³). For Cast Iron (7,200 kg/m³) multiply by 0.917, for Brass by 1.083, and for 6061 Aluminum (2,700 kg/m³) multiply by 0.344.
Hot-rolled TMT rebar, structural angles, and MS plates are manufactured within permissible rolling mill tolerances under ASTM A6/A615 and IS 1786 standards—typically ±3% to ±7% depending on bar diameter and plate thickness. Additionally, deformed TMT rebar ribs and chequered tear-drop floor lugs add minor surface steel volume, though IS/ASTM bar designations calibrate rib geometry to nominal theoretical unit mass.
A 1-meter by 1-meter mild steel sheet that is 1 millimeter thick has a volume of 0.001 cubic meters and weighs exactly 7.85 kilograms (17.31 lbs). Fabricators use 7.85 kg/m² per mm of thickness as a mental shortcut: a 6 mm thick MS plate measuring 1.25 m × 2.50 m (3.125 m²) weighs 6 × 7.85 × 3.125 = 147.19 kg.
Subtract the hollow inner circle from the outer circle: Area = (π ÷ 4) × [OD² − (OD − 2T)²], which simplifies algebraically to π × T × (OD − T). Multiplying by steel density (7,850 ÷ 1,000,000) produces the industry pipe constant: Weight (kg/m) = 0.02466 × T × (OD − T), with OD and wall thickness T both in millimeters. Never enter nominal pipe bore (NB) in place of true OD!
In metric markets (India, Europe, Middle East, APAC), TMT reinforcing bars are rolled in standard 12-meter (39.37 ft) lengths, while structural pipes, hollow tubes (SHS/RHS), and equal angles ship in 6-meter (19.69 ft) lengths. In the United States and Canada, rebar and structural tube commonly ship in 20-foot (6.10 m), 40-foot (12.19 m), and 60-foot mill lengths.
